Teeth of the Sea – Highly Deadly Black Tarantula (Album Review)

Highly Deadly Black Tarantula is the fourth album from London experimental quartet Teeth of the Sea, who have come along in leaps and bounds since their debut Orphaned by the Ocean in 2009. Their sound is almost impossible to pigeonhole as they manage to continuously blur the line between rock, psychedelia, drone, metal and electronica with more influences than you can shake a stick at. Teeth of the Sea’s previous album Master was an odyssey of epic proportions, successfully fusing psychedelic rock with electronica whereas HDBT is a much more heavier and sparser record brimming with bass synths, brutal drumming and blistering distortion.

The album opener, All My Venom starts off slowly as a monotonous drone seeps insidiously out into the airwaves underpinned by a booming drum pounding like thunder in the distance.  A lone guitar riff starts to devours itself in the background whilst bursts of brass weave around chilling waves of synths before the whole thing culminates in a tribal apocalypse of drums and white noise. Brutal is an understatement. The looped screaming vocals on Animal Manservant are synchronized with an absolute belter of a bass synth line that just won’t let up and the band …
