Backseat Mafia reviews Transmissions from the Outer Realms at Liverpool Psych Fest

Photo of Rocket's Johnny O's visuals during Teeth of the Sea

Here are the extracts from the Rocket shows (though no Goat review):

Lay Llamas
Next up on the Camp stage were the Lay Llamas. I must admit that since finding out they were playing this year’s festival I had struggled to get into them. However, about a month ago, I found myself listening to their album ‘Ostro’ and everything seemed to suddenly click into place, and I now find their music to be relaxing and thoughtful – it definitely takes a few listens before the challenge also kicks in. Live the band were brilliantly exciting as they pounded out a high tempo set full of deep grooves, fascinating asides and interesting diversions. If that sounds a bit strange what I am trying to convey is that the set would have been a huge success with the beats alone, that there was so much more going on here is testament to a band who I am sure will take us to some very interesting places in the coming years – another winner from Rocket Recordings.

Anthroprophh
Here’s a warning for those of a nervous disposition, never go and see Anthroprophh live! This assault, there’s no other word for it, was as loud and intense as anything I’ve witnessed. It was thrilling, visceral, mind blowing; and yet also had nuance to it. Playing mainly tracks from the brilliant new album ‘Outside The Circle‘ the trio, comprising former ‘Head’ Paul Allen and fellow Bristolian duo The Big Naturals (Gareth Turner, bass/ electronics and Jesse Webb, drums), invaded our very souls with a performance which was both raw and complex. There was no escape from this sonic attack which was relentless and utterly invigorating and by the end I felt exhausted and yet strangely cleansed. If you like your music loud, heavy and intelligent go and check Anthroprophh out, you won’t be disappointed.

Hills
Hills were another of my must sees at this Festival. On record the band seem to straddle the divide between melodic song structures and more dissonant Krautrock improvisations with comfort and ease. This was something which was replicated with this live performance consisting of a series of 10 minute plus jams which explored many areas of music, but never lost its way. It was one of those sets which seemed to build in intensity, taking the audience to increasingly deep psychedelic experiences, providing the backdrop to explore and reflect. The light show, which my photos hardly do justice to, was, like most of the bands who occupied the Camp stage on this amazing night, stunning. A brilliant visual, aural and existential experience.

Teeth of the Sea
Of all the Rocket Recordings artists who played the Camp stage Teeth of the Sea were perhaps the ones I least expected to like. I have the band’s ‘Master’ album, which for me is on the edge of accessibility. As a result I thought that the band might be too abstract for my taste. What I experienced, however, was my performance of the Festival. Beginning with a single brass horn being sampled and repeated, the band proceeded to add layer upon layer of instrumentation building the intensity of the music while also adding the sort of beats that defied the audience to keep still. This was a performance that I found both exciting and, in places, intensely moving in a way that one rarely gets in this form of live music. This was aided by a visual show which was at times ostentatious, and at others bleak and disturbing. Good music can challenge, but it can also entertain. For me Teeth of the Sea did both in spades. No superlative would be adequate!

Gnod
From the moment GNOD (excitingly with White Hills’ Dave W also on stage) hit the go button the packed Camp knew we were in for something special. This collective may be unpredictable in terms of who is on stage on any one night but this was a truly momentous performance of really exciting and visceral improvisations which took the audience to high after high after high. GNOD were in the mood to party and party hard. Hard and heavy as the beats, jazz improvs, repetitive drones and guitar attacks came in wave after wave of sonic attacks which at the same time gave us energy and sapped our resistance to impediment. It was a huge feel good performance at a time when we had been though huge slabs of intensity earlier in the evening. Inspired and inspirational!

BackSeat Mafia reviews Anthroprophh

REVIEW – OUTSIDE THE CIRCLE BY ANTHROPROPHH

This Autumn is turning out to be a pretty exciting time for psych fans with a whole slew of new albums coming out. Of these one of my more anticipated releases is the second album from Anthroprophh, the project from Paul Allen of brilliant Bristol psych noise band The Heads. I have been looking forward to hearing it because, while the first eponymously titled album was very good I had heard an even more promising direction from the recent Cardinal Fuzz 12” release, ‘Precession’/ ‘Ebbe’, which showcased Allen’s collaboration with fellow Bristolians Big Naturals. For me these tracks were fuller and more interesting than the originals and suggested that something quite inspired might emerge through this meeting of these massive sound minds.

It has.

Outside The Circle is a monumental album: monumental because of the massive ritualistic sounds that pervade it, such as on ‘Albrechtdron’ and ‘See’. If it was a structure it would be a dark monolith which at first sight seems impenetrable but, as the layers are excavated, huge tracts of meaning are revealed...

Goat live at Incubate – footage and review

Here's some footage of yesterdays stunning Goat show at Incubate where they closed the festival in style!!

Also here is a great review from Skyline Reviews:

Fanboy-mode was switched on as we were told to wait on the stairs of Midi. As soon as the doors opened, the 1000 capacity venue was filled within minutes. Yes, this band is huge right now. Yes, they will play main stages of major festivals in 2015 and bring new hope within all the generic radio-friendly bullshit. Yes, they are retro as hell. But how could they not be, since Goat basically reincarnates music which is a thousand years old?

It’s not an excuse, mind you. There are always limitations to what a band playing 70′s psychedelic funk/afrobeat can do. BUT. Goat have evolved. No more saxophone or organ this time. This version of the band is far more ‘Roadburn’ than ‘World Music’. And indeed, just like their debut, ‘Commune’ only truly starts making sense when performed live. Goat is now a band that can fill 90 minutes at a rapid pace, melting songs into each other to the delight of the dancing, sweating and mesmerized crowd.

The dancing, jumping and hypnotizing singers bring a spectacular performance completely free of sexist oppression which so often plagues female artists in music. The band is so absolutely brilliant, compounded by Midi’s perfect sound: those cymbals, those wah-wah pedals, DAT BASS! Literally nothing can go wrong with this celebration of pure music. Goat is originally from northern Sweden. Once you visit that part of the world (preferably in a car), ‘Commune’ can be understood perfectly as an album that basically expresses the grand open spaces and the insignificance of humans therein. This band doesn’t only produce something timeless and utterly addictive, it also throws you into a world of mysticism. A world in which we still cannot grasp the full extent of what is exactly going on around us. Watching Goat is nothing more and nothing less than the vicarious experience of that mystery. This is so powerful that it is inevitable for this band to become absolutely huge. As long as they keep doing exactly what they do, this is only to be celebrated.

In the Cockpit With Rocket Recordings – a psych symposium at Liverpool Psych Fest

Not only are we curating 'Transmissions from the Outer Realms' at Liverpool Psych Fest. John, Chris and Jimmy from Teeth of the Sea are also taking part in a 'psych symposium' on the Saturday of the festival.

The details of this discussion are as follows:

In the Cockpit With Rocket Recordings / 1.30PM
Rocket Recordings land their ‘Transmissions From The Outer Realms’ curation at Liverpool Psych Fest this year, but have been releasing psych-infused outsider music since their unlikely inception in 1998. With releases by the likes of Teeth Of The Sea, Gnod, Cherrystones, The Heads, Shit & Shine and Goat peppering their 15 year history, what is it that makes label bosses Chris Reeder and Johnny O keep going? What is it about the perilous nature of issuing marvellous head music that makes them tick? And, from an artist’s perspective, what is the experience of being part of the dysfunctional Rocket family really like?

For this session, Rocket Recording’s Chris Reeder and Johnny O will be joined by Teeth Of The Sea’s Jimmy Martin, hoping to navigate the label’s past and give us an insight into Rocket’s future.

Christopher Torpey (Bido Lito! Magazine) - Chair
Chris Reeder (Rocket Recordings)
Johnny O (Rocket Recordings)
Jimmy Martin (Teeth Of The Sea)

We will no doubt be extremely hungover , so if you want to hear some mumblings about Rocket, come along.

Not only that Nicola from Lay Llamas wil be involved in another discussion about the current Italian occults psych scene entitled:

Dark Arts Of The Eternal City / 4.30 pm
Joseph Stannard (The Wire) - chair
Nicola Giunta (Lay Llamas)

First Listen: GOAT, ‘Commune’ on NPR Music

First Listen: GOAT, ‘Commune’ on NPR Music

'If someone said that the band GOAT took its name from the initials for "Get Out A Tambourine," it'd be easy to believe. The Swedish collective makes irresistible trance/dance music that doubles as hypnotic hippie hoodoo. GOAT captures the spirit of the '60s in its guitar meanderings and acid tones; its rhythms feel inspired by rave culture and electronic music, but are made with hands instead of machines. Oh, and the band members wear masks, hit cowbells, and sing in unison a lot.'

'Commune, GOAT's second album, balances all that joy with the darkness of krautrock: The band Can and its minimalist excursions come to mind, but then there are also moments that would fit comfortably as an artifact from the first psychedelic era circa 1968. The song titles onCommune ("Talk To God," "Goatchild," "Goatslaves," "Gathering Of Ancient Tribes") tell a story, even when it's hard to make out the words. Throughout, the album's strong, clear vibe positively calls out for listeners to don face paint and grab a cowbell — or even a tambourine.'

Agitation Free///Pekka Airaksinen///Airway///Albrecht/d///Alcatraz

Times have changed since the days when arcane aural wisdom was passed down from disciple to disciple by word of mouth, in dusty record stores littered with inexpensive stacks of second-hand wax and via late-night post-pub sessions in which eager obscurists would brandish their latest esoteric discoveries through a booze and smoke-addled haze. The 'Nurse With Wound list' may have been replaced in popular consciousness by a binary blizzard of Spotify playlists and MP3 files. Yet the idealistic vision of the true psychedelic obsessive still stands proud, a monolith impervious to all adversity and compromise.

The Deep Freeze Mice////Dharma Quintet///Dies Irae///Dome///Doo-Dooettes

Moreover, in an era where the word 'psych' itself is fast being overused to the point of meaninglessness, there are certain seers who can always be relied upon to brandish an artistic insight into third-eye salvation that departs from its obsessive origins to offer trashed transcendence above and beyond the physical form. One such is Paul 'Prof' Allen, the mastermind of Anthroprophh, whose second album 'Outside The Circle' is a dizzying psychic voyage that exists in, around and at all points of the eternal amplified axe-worship continuum.

Heratius///Hero///Juan Hidalgo///Hugh Hopper///Horde Catalytique Pour La Fin///Horrific Child

Anthroprophh began in earnest after 'Prof's departure from Bristolian cult The Heads, in whose auspices he had made a number of head-spinning records that surfed a haphazard psychic spiral from an overflowing ashtray to the stars. Yet 'Outside The Circle', the second album from the trio he formed with the Big Naturals duo of Gareth Turner and Jesse Webb, sees him steadfastly affirming his own wayward path through a vivid aural terrain of garage-birthed gnarl, FX pedal euphoria and inhospitable drone-vortexes. At times startling, at others darkly comic, and at all times assaulting the unsuspecting freak unawares, it's a treasure trove of titanic wig-outand blissful trance states.

Maschine Nr. 9///Mate and Vallancien///Costin Miereanu///Min Bul///Mnemonists

Whilst 'Outside The Circle' bears a plentiful amount of stylistic hallmarks gleaned from 'Prof's years inhabiting the record-racks and small-hours listening sessions of yore himself, its inherent beauty centres on the fact that this is no slavish retrogressive pastiche, and no tribute to glories past, rather the sound of an irreverent master bearing down on enlightenment anew. From the sci-fi doom-out of the appropriately-titled 'Space Box Zonk Machine' to the unnerving primitive electronica of 'Gottmelt', and from the kraut-fried whirl-y-gig of the title track via the deadpan Deviants-style 'Dead Man On The Scene' to the early-Monster Magnet-damaged finale 'See', no sacred stone is left unturned here. Yet at all times 'Prof''s guitar rages through the ether, all banshee howls and fiery tumult; a kaleidoscopic union between Helios Creed and the Velvet Underground of 'I Heard Her Call My Name'.

Secret Oyster///Seeselberg///Selten Gehörte Musik///Semool///Sonny Sharrock

'Outside The Circle' resides at a moment whereby fifty years of psychedelic culture and esoteric art messily collide and morph into an ornery and intimidating new elixir. Moreover, with 'Prof's credentials bolstered by the force of his band, and the sheer wealth of imagination he deploys in unassuming fashion readily apparent, this latest missive is manna for freaks of every stripe. From Terry-Nutkins-alikes to fresh-faced ingenues, few can remain impervious to this peerless display of frontier-destroying, mind-melting malevolence.

Ladies and gentlemen, witness a new monolith.

Ya Ho Wha 13///La Monte Young///Frank Zappa///ZNR///Zweistein

Multiple Exposure Vol: 8 – Anthroprophh (Gareth Turner)

Welcome to Volume 8 of our ongoing 'Multiple Exposure' series where we ask musicians to tell us about their favourite pieces of repetitive music.

This volume we are very happy to receive a list from Gareth Turner bass player in Anthroprophh (& Big Naturals), who have a new album 'Outside the Circle’ available on the 15th September.

1. JOE HENDERSON - Earth
(From the album elements, Hugo from The Heads turned me on to this, and Fat Paul called it entry level jazz .. maybe it is but who cares)
Joe Henderson

 2. CRASS - Shaved Women
(This band need no introduction, aggressive repetition. This band were so much more than a punk band ... I love the power of just repeating a vocal line, screaming babies ,screaming babies, screaming babies, screaming babies ……..)
Crass

3. CAN - Yoo Doo Right
(Obvious I know, but on first listen so many years ago it opened a door to so much music that I can't not mention them, could have picked a bunch of tracks but this was the first one I heard)
CAN

4. CHARLES ROUSE - Two Is One
(From the album of the same name, great wobbly repetitive bass... as a bass player what more could I ask for, ha)
Charles Rosue

5. STEREOLAB/NURSE WITH WOUND- Simple Headphone Mind
(Another band who I could have picked a bunch of tracks from, brought repetitive krautrock almost into the world of pop ... in their own way)
Stereolab/ NWW

6. MELVINS - Charmicarmicat
(From the Eggnog 10" Buzz and Dale reinventing the sloooooooow)
Melvins

7. NEU "Hallogallo"
(Yep I know its a bit obvious ... but I wanted to listen to it while I was making the list)
NEU

8. GNOD - The Somnambulists Tale pt III
(Can't not mention this band, love the way they sit on the groove and let it simmer ...and the hang drum is a great touch)
GNOD

9. DNA - You And You
(Great 7” well worth picking up, only a few minutes long but worth every penny , angsty no wave)
DNA

10. THIS HEAT - Horizontal Hold
(This version is from the Peel Session LP “Made Available”, Charles Hayward can sure hold a beat down)
This Heat

11. MIN BUL - Champagne of Course
(Taken form the self titled LP, great repetitive jazz from the 70’s, upright bass hold a circling groove as a backdrop for some psychedelic mayhem)
MIN BUL

12. PAILHEAD - No Bunny
(Collaboration between Ian Mackay of Minor Threat and Ministry’s/Revolting Cock’s Al Jorgensen, I remember going to see Revolting Cocks in the late 80's in London, took acid before the show it was a ‘Saddam Hussien’ double dipper, motorik beats with a heavy dose of sex, its def a show that has been etched in my brain)
